The images in this section were taken by Franki Raffles in November 1985 during a visit to the Guerrero region of Mexico. She travelled with her mother, the art dealer and curator, Gillian Raffles, to document the Guerrero dance festival, south of Mexico City. The photographs were used to contextualise and promote the exhibition Mascaras de Mexico at the Mercury Gallery, Edinburgh and London. The exhibition, together with Franki’s photographs, was reviewed by Clare Henry in The Glasgow Herald, 18 February 1986.
Franki also undertook a handful of other commissions for the Gallery including some artist portraits. Gillian Raffles established The Mercury Gallery in Cork Street, London from 1964-2001. She represented a number of well-known Scottish painters and for three years in the late 1980s she established The Mercury Gallery in Edinburgh.
