To Let You Understand was a project initiated by the Edinburgh District Council Women’s Committee. The aim of the project was to document women’s working lives in Edinburgh, informed by statistical information about pay and conditions collected by the Women’s Unit. The images were presented alongside quotes gathered from the women depicted, and they combine to create a powerful document of women’s lives in the city at that time. This was brought together as an exhibition which toured community venues and also distributed as a booklet (available below). The use of direct quotes that both inform and contextualise the choice of imagery works very powerfully to underscore and also explicitly politicise the images presented. The sophisticated use of text in combination with her black and white, photographic images is a technique that Franki went on to develop later in her career, in projects such as Women Workers, Lot’s Wife and in the Zero Tolerance campaigns.
