In June 1984 Franki set out, with her four year old daughter, Anna, and partner, Sandy, to travel through the Soviet Union overland to China on the trans-Siberian railway. The two women were away for over twelve months and visited China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

The images she made on this journey sought to document the realities of the changing lives of women in the country. The photographs from China and Tibet were taken between October 1984 and February 1985. On her return to Edinburgh Franki selected a number of images for exhibition.

Women in China and Tibet was an exhibition at the First of May Bookshop, August 1986.

Women in China was an exhibition held at the Corridor Gallery, Glenrothes, Fife, in December 1987.
